Greetings,
A Eurasian Wigeon was
recently found by Mary Mckintrick at Great Pond in Hatfield. In Eastern Mass, it
seems like Eurasian Wigeons show up every year, but here in the Valley, they
are hard to come by. In fact, this is
only the second one I’ve seen in Hampshire County, and coincidently, the first
sighting was also at Great Pond in Hatfield, in April 2007. There was also a
nice variety of waterfowl to go along with the Eurasian Wigeon, about a dozen
American Wigeon, Wood Ducks, Mallards, American Black Ducks, Green-winged Teal,
Northern Pintails, Ring-necked Ducks, Hooded & Common Mergansers.
Fox Sparrows, one of my
favorite Sparrows just started to make their way into western Mass in the last
few days. I had a high count of seven at the feeder a couple of days ago. With
the southerly winds and warm temps, I expect more March migrants in the next
few days.
